Do you think paradise is really just in Fiji, Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands? Those magestic places don’t even compare to the paradise that our passed loves ones are enjoying this current moment. It took me 10 years to visit my beautiful godmother and always smiling grandfather. I was fortunate enough to have visited Tlacotalpan, Veracruz a couple of weeks ago with my cousins.
I hide my emotions pretty well. Little did people know, my heart was pounding to revisit the same roads that caused Lucy, my godmother, to be called upstairs to heaven. I remember the day like it was yesterday. She had a smile on her face that day, beaming with happiness calling me “Tres”- The nickname her and my godfather would call me being short for “Tres-fani.” She saught after me and was always there for me, even if it was to give me vaseline for my thighs to help with the hot humidity of Veracruz. She was there to laugh with me when I asked for the “cookie” flavor at the ice cream parlor when the attendant looked at me with his confused eyes. She truly was one of a kind.
Chato. Let me tell you about Chato. My grandfather and his laugh made my days. Looking at him all happy and worry free made me so proud to be a Vazquez. He would sit on his chair outside his house and spend time with the family who loved him so much. He was the prime example of what my family has and will always be about, family is everything.
I had checked the weather the day of the trip. Cloudy, rainy, storms- definitely what I wanted for my Mexico trip. Regardless, I knew I would have some fun if it was raining. Surprisingly, it ended up being sunny for most of the trip. I thank mi madrina y mi abuelo for letting me enjoy their hometown more than I thought I would.
I have learned to not get mad at losing my loved ones so fast. I didn’t “lose them.” They simply went to Paradise and I know that it’s nothing less than beautiful because they were chosen to be there. Yes I cry for them, but simply tears of joy knowing that they’re watching over me and how fortunate I was to have them in my life. I will be back to Tlacotalpan and with each visit, they will be there for me and I will visit them with the smiles they both used to beam upon me.
